James has worked on numerous commissions for British regiments including The Grenadier Guards, The Rifles, The Devonshire and Dorsets, The Black Watch, The Royal Artillery and 22SAS
.
In 2006 and 2007 James travelled to Iraq and Afghanistan embedded in the British Forces. Working in difficult conditions he produced a sketch book of studies depicting his experiences which was reproduced as a feature article in The Times Newspaper.
Art in the Aftermath. Style for Soldiers
In 2017 James was invited by Emma Willis, founder of Style for Soldiers, to be an artistic mentor for injured soldiers. Her charity was set up to help former soldiers to become professional artists. James focused on Dougie Adams who was interested in painting landscapes.
